ok, i understand what virtual memory is so i don't need that explanation. what i want to know is if windows will use the virtual memory even if it doesn't really need it. if so, i could just put the virtual memory down more right? my computer has been running kinda slow and every time i use gimp 2.6 it says virtual memory increasing. i think this is the reason my computer has been slower, because more virtual memory is being used.
i have xp sp3 and 1 gb ram

The best setting is to leave virutal memory as is (let windows determine the proper size).
However, there are a couple of things to look at as far as the computer running slow when you load/run Gimp. First is how much HD space is left? You should have at least 15% free space. Second is to clean out the Temp files and run defrag on a regular basis.
