| Restoring System Partition (using ASR and Backup) on raid array |

| I'm upgrading the disks in a raid array and I can't seem to restore the system partition. I have a PowerEdge 2800 with the Perc raid controller, (4) 36gb scsi drives. Raid configured as level 5. One of the drives went bad so it was decided to upgraded the drives to (3) 146gb drives. I did an ASR backup with Backup along with a regular backup with the system state. All data is backed up. I replace the drive and configured the raid array in the bios for the new disks. It took 3 hours to do the background intialization. Then I used ASR to try to restore the system partition. On restart it gave me an error say that it was missing kernel drivers. Next I tried using the Dell Server Assist and got Server 2003 up. I then used backup to restore the c: drive and the system state. On restart, it would just keep on recycling. I would get may a few minutes of the windows server start screen and then it would restart. What am I doing wrong? For ASR restore, am I supposed to load the raid drivers? I thinking that I should just restore the system state and then reload all the programs back to system partition (anti-virus, etc) Also, should I restore the system state before or after I do all of the updates and security patches? Any help would be appreciated. |

Use a 3rd party backup (Acronis, Ghost, etc...) and save the image to a network location or elsewhere 2. Take note the system partitioning of your server using the 4x36GB HDD 3. Remove the old HDD and Install the new 3x146GB HDD 4. Install the OS using the DELL Startup CD 5. Restore the Image And you're done.... |
