what is he gonna reinstall with meandrake, it came with xp preinstalled.
.art format is used by aol, the oem probably set it so aol opens pictures.
first use mspaint.exe to open the .bmp, if you get the same error then the problem is with the bitmap. If not reassociate it with the windows picture and fax viewer.
The way to reassociate is to hold down the shift key, right click a bmp, select open with..., choose the windows fax and image viewer.

Because of all the legal problems with microsoft, oem's are free to do whatever they want. The only thing microsoft really cares about is the desktop icons, everything else the oem can change really. For win95, oem's had to include a microsoft cd and documentation. Now they dont have any restriction, they only have to include the setup files somewhere - on cd, hard drive, somewhere.
