Muriel what you are describing sounds like windows telling you the driver is not signed. It'll usually say something like "this driver has not been tested...are you sure you want to continue?".

Using an unsigned driver does not mean it wont work, it just means microsoft has not tested this driver, therefore microsoft cannot guantee the results. In the past people would install 3rd party drivers not tested and the system would be hosed, and people blamed microsoft for the experience. This sets your expectations that if the pc doesnt boot after installing the driver - it's probably caused by the driver. It seems common sense to not install beta or untested drivers, but many people do.

What i would do for you, is i would search support.microsoft.com to see if there are any known issues with this printer. Also when you search look to see if the driver is on the xp cd, an "in box" driver". If the driver is not on the xp cd your gonna need to download the driver from the manu's website.

Also go to epson's website to see if they have a newer driver, or what there plans are for xp. Usually a manu will say if there's a driver being developed for xp.

Also check www.microsoft.com/HCL, but it sounds like you've done this-no?

I'll post more specific information tomorrow if you need it.

Muriel - I have this same scanner and it is compatible with WinXP. However, there are WinXP specific drivers on Epson's web site. The CD disk that came with the scanner doesn't include the right drivers. If you have trouble downloading them, let me know and I can e-mail to you - chas.putnam@verizon.net.
