Hmm, exactly 30 mins? First thing i would check is Task scheduler, to make sure nothing is being scheduled to run after a certain amount of time.

Second, i would check the indexing service. By default the indexing service will log everything on the pc when it's idle. You can turn it off right clicking on drive c, and unchecking the box (only for ntfs drivers).

Third, i would try safe mode (restart, press f8, safe mode) and msconfig diagnostic startup, to see if it's 3rd party software causing the problem. If it doesn't happen in a clean boot try to narrow it down.

Check event viewer (control panel > admin tools > event viewer) for anything logged around the time this happened.

Next i would check the power management. Is your pc acpi or apm? Right click my computer > manager > device manager. On the right hand side dbl click computer. If it says Standard pc=apm. If it says Advanced computer...=acpi. If it's apm update the bios. Go into control panel > classic view > power options > and disable the power options there.

Also, after this happens, ctrl alt del to get task mgr, and click processes tab. Is anything using the cpu up a lot? What's there?
