| There is also the possibility of hardware failure. Before doing a clean install, use something like the tools in SystemWorks or PC Doctor to check your hardware (i.e. run tests on memory, your video card, etc). Last time I had something similar, a RAM chip on the video card had crapped out and was causing a similar problem. If that doesn't work, suggest backing up your data and doing a clean install.
