Yes, it's true you can sometimes use win2k drivers for winxp, however understand that this will not always work, and if it works your not getting all the functionality. For example, if you use win2k drivers for your winxp printer, it might print but it may only print text or just black and white. If you want the device to work perfectly get a winxp driver for it.

In device manager you can right click on the unknown device, left click on remove. Then scan for hardware changes, to make windows plug and play detect the device. A yellow circle means a bad driver. You can find out the exact problem by viewing the properties of the device. If it's conflicting there's not much you can do in winxp. Usually you cannot change the resources, if you do that may break plug and play.
