If you have WinXP home already installed, put in the CD, reboot, and when you see "press any key to install", do that. You'll go thru several text screens. One of the first will look for an eligible upgrade (yes, WinXP can upgrade/install over itself)

Follow the text menu and install on the same partition. One of the options will be to delete the partition. Do that, and then you'll get the option to format in NTFS.

The best thing about a clean install versus an upgrade is there is no potential "carry over" of bad drivers, software, etc.
